Hello, dear translatewiki.net user.
This is the http://translatewiki.net e-mail newsletter for September 2011. This month’s newsletter focuses on MediaWiki 1.18, Kiwix, a translation rally and more. Join our latest Translation Rally now! The project’s success relies on your continued involvement and enthusiasm.
A web version of this newsletter is available at: https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Project:News/Newsletter_2011-09
Translation Rally: Contribute 500 translations and share in 1,000 Euro
Very soon the second Translation Rally of 2011 is starting. This rally is sponsored by Wikimedia Nederland, the Dutch Wikimedia chapter and is facilitated by Stichting Open Progress. We are very grateful for this wonderful support! The September 2011 translatewiki.net Translation Rally starts at 2 September 2011 00:00 UTC and will run until 9 September 2011 24:00 UTC. Check out the project page for more details.
The previous rally resulted in 56,650 new translations. Let’s make this the best Translation Rally ever!
Translatewiki.net goes semantic
We have installed a few Semantic MediaWiki extensions at translatewiki.net. The first use case is a map of translators. There is a map on each language portal and project page. A map of all translators is also possible.
There are plans to use semantic features for other things too. Please see RfC: Starting Project Terminologies and Personal Goals.
Product support and staff
Translatewiki.net mostly “does stuff” and as an organisation we are notoriously averse of all things administrative. We hate it. One thing we like to improve is reaching out regularly to you. We would love to inform you on a monthly basis of how our community is able to help real users of real software be more productive, more educated, and more able to get things done. If you care and have the skills to help us, please let us know. We can use your help.
Things however do get done:
- Newly supported projects: Encyclopedia of Life and Kiwix.
- Plural support has been improved and extended for FreeCol, Shapado, Toolserver and Pywikipediabot.
- MediaWiki is nearing the final stages before a 1.18 release.
- We soon hope to offer support for MyBB, maintained by the new staff member Huji Lee (huji).
- Robin Pepermans (SPQRobin) has been added to staff group.
If you are a developer of a promising Free and Open Source Software product and you are looking for a great community to localise your product, please get in touch with us!
Operational news
In the beginning of March we moved to a brand new server made available to use by netcup.de, who has been our computing sponsor since 2007. Our current hosting package will allow us to do whatever we need to support your continued translation efforts.
More detailed news can be found on our News page. Follow translatewiki on Twitter for the latest news.
Finally, translatewiki.net now has about 5,800 registered users. 3,750 of those are sent this newsletter, and of those only 2,250 people have translator rights. You may want to finish the steps that will get you the status of translatewiki.net translator!
We welcome feedback about this newsletter. Please let us know by sending a reply to this mail. We will try to accommodate your wishes.
